Gastric Sleeve

What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Gastric sleeve surgery is the most commonly performed weight loss surgery procedure in Turkey. This procedure involves the removal of approximately 75-80% of the stomach, leaving the remaining portion in the shape of a small tube or banana. The normal capacity of the stomach is around 1-1.5 liters, but after surgery, the stomach volume is reduced to 100-150 ml. The main aim of gastric sleeve surgery is to reduce the size of the stomach and help patients lose weight by limiting their food intake.

As a result of the reduction in stomach size, patients feel full faster, eat less, and lose weight. Furthermore, the part of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone ghrelin is removed during the procedure, which helps to suppress appetite. Long-term success of the surgery depends on the patient’s commitment to their new lifestyle and dietary habits.

How Does Gastric Sleeve Surgery Work? Before performing gastric sleeve surgery, Turkey Bariatrics conducts a thorough evaluation of the patient. This evaluation includes tests, analyses, examinations, and consultations with specialists in cardiology, radiology, nutrition and dietetics, psychiatry, internal medicine, endoscopy, and anesthesia. Once the evaluations are complete and the patient is deemed suitable for the procedure, the surgery is scheduled.

Gastric sleeve surgery is performed under general anesthesia using laparoscopic techniques. This minimally invasive surgery involves making small incisions and using special instruments to remove a portion of the stomach. The procedure typically takes between 1-2 hours to complete.

Patients may experience discomfort or pressure in the stomach area following the procedure, which can be managed with pain medication. Patients are encouraged to start walking as soon as possible after the surgery.”
